Day one: Success

Guess what? I saw my first tornado!

After giving up on a supercell that wasn't getting its act together west of Hays, KS, we intercepted a much more promising supercell even further west, in Shermon county near Goodland, KS. This cell had nasty, awesome, crazy, twisty, inflow bands, and the other structures were phenomenal as well.

As we approached the cell from about 10 to 15 miles out, the rain-free base lowered and turned into an unmistakable wallcloud. Didn't notice an RFD, but within a couple minutes, a little funnel crept it's way out of the lowering. The sun was lowering in the west, providing a golden backdrop to the eerie scene. Again, we were quite far away, so we couldn't see any debris...so it wasn't completely obvious as to if it was in contact with the ground, but reports from closer storm spotters and local law enforcements confirmed that it was, indeed, a tornado.

It was a short-lived tornado, as it lasted only about 5 minutes, and it was probably an EF0, but I saw a tornado on my first day of chasecation, so I can't complain!

Stay tuned
